The project consisted of the major renovation of Miramar’s former interim library (an existing 10,140-square-foot, single-story, steel- and wood-framed building) to serve as the new Student Resource and Welcome Center. The facility was designed as an integral component of the recently opened Student Service Center. The west entrance of this new building houses the Welcome Center, which includes Outreach and Assessment/Testing Services. The east entrance connects students to a state-of-the-art wellness and Student Health Center. The new building also houses permanent office and meeting space for the San Diego Miramar College Academic Senate.
Sustainable Features:
  • Water Savings - Total water use has been reduced by 69% through water-efficient landscaping and irrigation practices.
  • Recycled Construction Waste - Over 50% of construction waste was diverted from local landfills and recycled appropriately.
  • Energy Atmosphere - Through careful consideration and thoughtful design, the project team reduced the building’s energy costs by more than 11% as compared to a similar building.
  • Building Reuse - This major renovation has utilized over 90% of the existing structure, including the foundations, roof deck, and interior and exterior walls.
  • Daylighting – Twenty-one tubular daylighting devices will harvest light, significantly cutting energy costs used to light building interiors. Energy savings can be up to 75%.
