Scope/Summary:
Combined as a dual-classroom building project, the new Mathematics & Business building was constructed concurrently with the
Humanities & Arts building. Construction began in April 2009, and was completed in November 2010.
The Mathematics & Business building consists of approximately 45,899 gross square feet and 32,100 assignable square feet of new building construction. The building includes new "smart" classrooms equipped with computers, audiovisual and multimedia equipment, a mathematics research center, and related office space for faculty and support staff.
The new classroom building was awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for sustainable and green design by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
Sustainable Features:
- Sloped roofs provide north-facing clerestory windows (a band of narrow windows at the very high wall) allow light to filter into adjacent spaces as well as south-facing photovoltaic panels
- The design includes energy-efficient “thermal massing,” which delays the transfer of heat throughout the course of the day and minimizes the building’s heating or cooling load. Heavy materials such as brick, concrete and stone can all be used to achieve thermal massing
- All windows utilize high-performance glass that allows sunlight to filter into the building, but reduces the amount of UV light and solar heat
- Recycled materials and high-efficiency lighting, plumbing, and mechanical systems are used throughout the project
The project received the San Diego Region Project of the Year award by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) San Diego Chapter in May 2011.
The building's design was named "Project of Distinction" winners in 2008 Education Design Showcase, honoring innovative yet practical solutions in planning, design and construction of higher education facilities.
