The three-level, 45,000 square foot facility includes faculty offices, classrooms, and a lecture hall. The design, in form and orientation, respects existing campus circulation and building elements to anchor the western end of the academic building corridor. Challenging site constraints reinforced an efficient design that achieved a modest budget. Two theater-style classrooms surround an atrium allowing for student interaction in multicultural and language studies. A permanent showcase for an extensive collection of African art was a key design element in the space planning. In addition to becoming the design standard for future campus redevelopment, the project fulfills the objective "to enhance experiences and communication in the arts and humanities among faculty, students, professional artists, and the San Diego community".
