"A" Building Renovation

Project Delivery Method: Design Build
Project Budget: $58 million
Construction Duration: 2016 – 2018
Funding Source: Proposition N

Scope/Summary

A Building
The renovation of the “A” building will upgrade 52,000 square feet of Student Services space, creating new homes for Business Services, Accounting, Alumni Foundation, Admissions, Assessment, CalWORKS, Communications & Public Information, Counseling, DSPS, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Mental Health, Peer Mentoring, Records, Student Health, Transfer & Career, as well as Academic and Classified Senate, Executive Administration Offices, common areas and associated support spaces.

D Building Roof
The D building component of the project will replace the existing roof deck with a new concrete deck, new roof drains and piping and interior ceiling finishes within the cafeteria. At the rooftop deck, existing planters and raised areas of the roof will be transformed into student and faculty gathering areas, with new shade structures, gathering spaces, outdoor furniture, and landscaping. A new student bookstore will be housed in the west wing of the D building, and the faculty and student restrooms will be upgraded throughout.

T Building
The renovation of the “T” building involves approximately 77,000 square feet of space, creating new homes for the Engineering department and space for Agriculture, CACT/Incubators, Child Development, Electricity, Electronics, HVAC/AIRE, Machine Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, MESA, Printing/Reprographics/Mailroom, Shipping & Receiving, Technical Services and Data/IT Services. The building will also consist of renovated common areas and associated support space.

Site Improvements
In addition to the renovation of these three buildings, significant work will be completed to upgrade the site and spaces around and in between the buildings. Site access will be upgraded for ADA compliance with a new ramp system that will allow the flow of pedestrian traffic from the Science building courtyard to Schwartz Plaza. The deep canyon between the A and T buildings will be terraced and landscaped to allow for student travel and gathering/seating. A section of the A building will be removed to open up Schwartz Plaza to allow for access to the Student Success Center in the L Building as well as a main promenade running east/west along the A street corridor. These site improvements are intended to open the "front door" of the NW portion of the campus to the students and faculty who work and study throughout the buildings and spaces along the 16th St. corridor.
