Scope/Summary:

The North City Campus is a new, two‐story, 42,000-square-foot facility designated as the Campus of Excellence for Multimedia and Innovation for San Diego Continuing Education. The building has state‐of‐the‐art and technology rich classrooms, computer labs, multipurpose areas, and administrative offices to support the business technology curriculum. The facility also houses Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS). The project has a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The project includes land acquisition and construction of a two-story parking structure, completed in January 2012 as the first phase of the project.

Sustainable Features:

  • Open-entry courtyard provides daylighting and natural ventilation opportunities to the majority of the interior spaces.
  • Low-E glazing maximizes natural daylight and reduces energy demands for artificial lighting and cooling.
  • Highly efficient mechanical systems reduce energy consumption and exceed state energy efficiency standards by 35%. Daylight sensors automatically dim lights in response to available lighting .
  • Operable windows provide natural ventilation with sensors to shut down mechanical units when windows are open.
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures reduce water consumption by over 30% compared to standard fixtures.
  • Materials with high recycled content.
  • A minimum of 75% of construction waste was diverted from the local landfill.
  • Water-efficient landscaping with high‐efficiency drip irrigation system.
  • Drywell for treating storm runoff on-site.
  • Green roof.
